Position Overview:
The Motor Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, care, and maintenance of moderately complex and specialized motor equipment used in municipal operations. The position performs a variety of road construction, repair, maintenance, transportation, snow removal, and related manual tasks. The employee works under the direction of a supervisor and may provide guidance or supervision to Light Equipment Operators.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate medium and specialized motorized equipment for road construction, repair, and maintenance.
- Operate trucks to transport work crews, tools, materials, and equipment.
- Operate snowplows and other snow removal equipment as assigned.
- Operate bulldozers, graders, power shovels, and other heavy equipment when assigned.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs and routine servicing of assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain assigned vehicles and equipment in a clean and serviceable condition.
- Load and unload trucks and other equipment.
- Perform manual labor including cleaning culverts, shoveling snow, painting, and road and sewer maintenance.
- Assist with traffic control and related roadway activities as assigned.
- Follow oral and written instructions and complete assigned work safely and efficiently.
- May provide supervision or direction to Light Equipment Operators.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Key Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Option A: One year of experience operating medium- or heavy-duty, moderately complex, specialized motor equipment; or
- Option B: Two years of experience operating light automotive equipment, such as a car, pickup truck, panel truck, or station wagon.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Good knowledge of the operation of trucks, tractors, and other automotive equipment.
- Ability to safely and effectively operate moderately complex and specialized motor equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor equipment repairs and maintenance.
- Dependability, industry, and a strong commitment to completing assigned work.
- Ability to perform physical/manual tasks associated with municipal road, maintenance, and construction operations.
Special Requirements
- Must be eligible for a New York State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of application.
- Must possess a valid New York State CDL at the time of appointment and maintain the license throughout employment.
