Position Overview:
The Police Officer is responsible for protecting life and property, maintaining public safety, enforcing federal, state, and local laws, and providing professional service to the community. Duties include responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, conducting patrols, investigating incidents and crimes, making arrests when appropriate, preparing reports, assisting the public, and appearing in court as required. The position requires sound judgment, integrity, effective communication, physical readiness, and the ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patrol assigned areas by vehicle and on foot to maintain public safety and enforce laws.
- Monitor the security of unoccupied residential and commercial properties.
- Respond to suspicious activity, criminal complaints, and other calls for service.
- Investigate criminal offenses and make arrests when appropriate.
- Process, book, and transport prisoners as required.
- Direct traffic and enforce parking and traffic laws and regulations.
- Investigate reports of missing or wanted persons and stolen property.
- Maintain order during public gatherings, parades, and other community events.
- Provide information, directions, and assistance to members of the public.
- Operate police radio and other assigned equipment to communicate with dispatch and other personnel.
- Conduct criminal and plain-clothes investigations when assigned.
- Identify and report conditions requiring attention from other municipal departments.
- Assist with cases involving neglected, abused, or delinquent children when assigned.
- Prepare accurate reports documenting activities, incidents, investigations, and other work performed.
Key Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma or comparable diploma as described in Section 58 of the New York State Civil Service Law.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the use and capabilities of weapons.
- Knowledge of local geography, buildings, and the community served.
- Working knowledge of applicable laws, including Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Alcoholic Beverage Control Law, and local rules and ordinances.
- Ability to apply first aid.
- Ability to safely and properly operate a patrol vehicle and police radio equipment.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with people under stressful circumstances.
- Physical strength, agility, and conditioning sufficient to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Demonstrated integrity and sound judgment.
Special Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid New York State Driver License.
- Must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment.
- Must successfully complete a required background investigation, including fingerprinting, in accordance with applicable Municipal Police Training Council standards.
- Must successfully complete a required psychological evaluation prior to appointment.
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment medical evaluation.
